Moscow-backed authorities in Abkhazia reported 30 new cases of COVID-19, taking the tally of the total confirmed cases in the region to 13,428. 16 more patients have recovered, bringing the number of recoveries to 12,876. The number of COVID-related fatalities rose by 1 to 214. The number of active cases to date stands at 338.

13:10 GMT+4 – 6,757 Persons Vaccinated

According to the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC), a total of 6,757 persons have been vaccinated for COVID-19 since Georgia initiated vaccine rollout on March 15.

13:05 GMT+4 – Citizens Over 55 to Register for Vaccination

Health Minister Ekaterine Tikaradze announced today that come April 5, citizens over the age of 55 will be able to register for COVID-19 vaccination. In addition, patients on dialysis, as well as organ transplant recipients, will also be included in the immunization program, Tikaradze said.

Registration at the moment is only available for medical personnel and senior citizens over the age of 65.

01:00 GMT+4 – Georgia Receives Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccines

Georgia received 29,250 doses of Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in the early hours of March 25, procured and delivered by COVAX facility, a United Nations-backed vaccine-sharing scheme, the Ministry of Health reported. Georgians will now be able to choose between the two available Pfizer and AstraZeneca jabs.

Noteworthy that starting today senior citizens over the age of 65 will be able to register to receive COVID-19 jabs. Registration was previously only available for medical personnel.

18:30 GMT+4 – Occupied Abkhazia ‘PM’ Discharged

Occupied Abkhazia “prime minister” Alexander Ankvab was discharged from the Moscow hospital where he was undergoing treatment for COVID-19, though he will still require time to recover fully.

Ankvab tested positive for coronavirus on December 30 and was hospitalized in Moscow on January 8 after developing bilateral interstitial pneumonia, signs of severe respiratory failure, and drug-induced hepatitis.

11:30 GMT+4 – Pandemic Reduced Georgia’s Dependence on Russia, TI Georgia Says

In its latest report, Transparency International (TI) Georgia, a local watchdog, said the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic diminished the Georgian economy’s dependence on Russia. Namely, the watchdog cited a decrease in revenue from Russian tourism, remittances, and exports, down to constituting 5.7% of Georgia’s GDP in 2020 from 9% in 2019.

Moreover, TI said that Georgia’s exports to Russia dropped by 11.2%, while imports from Russia diminished by 9.2%. “Although since 2012, imports of Russian products have almost doubled to USD 900 million,” the watchdog noted, adding that Russia still comes in second among Georgia’s top importers after Turkey.

Georgia received the first batch of COVID-19 doses, the Ministry of Health reported. The rollout will begin on March 15.

The arrival is 43,200 doses of AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine delivered by COVAX facility, UN-backed vaccine-sharing scheme. The jabs will be delivered first to medical workers, said Health Minister Ekaterine Tikaradze.

Amiran Gamkrelidze, Head of the National Center for Disease Control stated that 82 centers are prepared nationwide to administer the vaccines, free of charge.

Moscow-backed authorities in Abkhazia have once again extended existing COVID-19 restrictive measures until April 12, the last set to expire on March 10.

The bans on mass gatherings in restaurants, banquet halls, and other enterprises of public catering, as well as on holding mass business, sports, entertainment, and other events in closed spaces have been prolonged.

The indoor areas of restaurants and other food catering facilities, previously only operating in the western city of Batumi, have reopened nationwide. Food facilities, however, are still only allowed to receive customers on workdays.

11:40 GMT+4 – High COVID Spread Risk at Tbilisi Mental Health Center, Public Defender Says

The Public Defender of Georgia’s Special Preventive Group found that “sanitary-hygienic rules are neglected” at the Tbilisi Mental Health Center, making the COVID-19 spread risk high. Most of the infrastructure is “outdated and faulty,” while common patients rooms are overcrowded, the Ombudsperson added.

Also according to the report, patients of the Mental Health Center are “not protected from violence, inhumane or degrading treatment,” while therapy via pharmaceutical drugs is used as the main form of psychiatric care over psycho-social rehabilitation. Moreover, the report found that underqualified staff, lack of human resources, bureaucratic shortcomings, among others, “fail to ensure treatment of patients while respecting their dignity.”

12:30 GMT+4 – Russian Mobile Hospital Concludes Abkhazia Stay

The mobile multidisciplinary hospital of the Russian Defense Ministry, which arrived in the occupied Abkhazia region on October 19, 2020, concluded its stay today.

Originally expected to depart from the occupied region on February 15, the hospital’s stay was extended until March 1 some three weeks ago.

05:00 GMT+4 – List of Nationals Who Can Enter Georgia Expanded

Armenia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Kazakstan, Russia, and Belarus have been added to the list of countries whose nationals can enter Georgia by providing a negative PCR test result at the airport upon arrival. The list previously included visitors from the EU, the U.S., Israel, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

05:00 GMT+4 – Certain COVID Restrictions Lifted

As of today, libraries, museums, conferences and trainings have resumed nationwide. Preschool facilities, both public and private, have reopened, however, 20% of employees must undergo mandatory testing once every two weeks. The indoor areas of restaurants and other food catering facilities have also reopened exclusively in the city of Batumi.
