Moscow-backed authorities in Abkhazia reported 95 new cases of COVID-19, taking the tally of total confirmed cases in the region to 8,920. 6 more COVID-related fatalities were reported, taking the number of deaths in the region since the onset of the virus to 123. The number of active cases to date stands at 1,931.

12:05 – 19 New Cases in Tskhinvali Region, 20 More Recoveries

Kremlin-backed South Ossetian authorities have reported 19 new cases, bringing the tally of the occupied region’s total confirmed cases to 2,409. 20 more patients have recovered, taking the region’s overall number of recoveries to 1,647. With 27 COVID-related fatalities reported since the onset of the virus, the number of active cases in the region to date stands at 735.  

11:10 GMT+4 – 368 People Fined for Defying COVID-19 Regulations

Georgian Interior Ministry has revealed 368 cases of disobeying regulations imposed against the spread of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. In particular, police have fined 87 citizens for defying isolation and/or quarantine rules, including those who violated the 21:00 – 05:00 curfew. 281 citizens were also fined for breaching face mask regulations.

According to the Georgian authorities, out of the 1,527 new COVID-19 infections diagnosed over the last 24 hours, the highest number of cases – 710 – was confirmed in Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi. The western Imereti region came in second with 239 reported cases.

As for the remaining new daily cases, 78 were reported in Adjara; 108 in  Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti; 63 in Kvemo Kartli; 130 in Shida Kartli; 47 in Mtskheta-Mtianeti; 105 in Kakheti; 14 in Samtskhe-Javakheti; 24 in Guria, and 9 in Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti region.

Georgia conducted 13,030 tests over the last 24 hours and reported 1,527 new daily cases of COVID-19, bringing the tally of total confirmed cases to 227,420. In the meantime, 1,282 more patients have recovered, increasing the number of recoveries to 211,727. 24 more COVID-related fatalities were recorded, taking the overall number of Georgia’s (excluding occupied territories) COVID-related deaths to 2,505. The number of active cases to date stands at 13,162.

Moscow-backed authorities in Abkhazia reported 150 new cases of COVID-19, taking the tally of total confirmed cases in the region to 8,825. 86 more patients have recovered, bringing the number of recoveries to 6,872. 4 more COVID-related fatalities were reported, taking the number of deaths in the region since the onset of the virus to 117. The number of active cases to date stands at 1,836.

18:05 GMT+4 – 20 New Cases, 22 More Recoveries Reported in Tskhinvali

Moscow-backed authorities in Georgia’s Tskhinvali Region/South Ossetia reported 20 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the tally of total confirmed cases to 2,390. 22 more patients have recovered, taking the overall number of recoveries to 1,627. With 27 COVID-related fatalities reported since the onset of the virus, the number of active cases in the region to date stands at 736. 

18:00 GMT+4 – Occupied Abkhazia’s ‘PM’ Tests Positive for COVID

Alexander Ankvab, prime minister of occupied Abkhazia, has tested positive for COVID-19 and has moved to self-isolation. Apsnypress news agency reported that Ankvab does not require hospitalization as his symptoms are mild.

11:10 GMT+4 – 525 People Fined for Defying COVID-19 Regulations

Georgian Interior Ministry has revealed 525 cases of disobeying regulations imposed against the spread of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. In particular, police have fined 95 citizens for defying isolation and/or quarantine rules, including those who violated the 21:00 – 05:00 curfew. 430 citizens were also fined for breaching face mask regulations.

According to the Georgian authorities, out of the 1,738 new COVID-19 infections diagnosed over the last 24 hours, the highest number of cases – 743 – was confirmed in Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi. The western Imereti region came in second with 301 reported cases.

As for the remaining new daily cases, 115 were reported in Adjara; 138 in  Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti; 123 in Kvemo Kartli; 100 in Shida Kartli; 32 in Mtskheta-Mtianeti; 107 in Kakheti; 25 in Samtskhe-Javakheti; 46 in Guria, and 8 in Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti region.

Georgia conducted 14,192 tests over the last 24 hours and reported 1,738 new daily cases of COVID-19, bringing the tally of total confirmed cases to 225,893. In the meantime, 1,494 more patients have recovered, increasing the number of recoveries to 210,445. 38 more COVID-related fatalities were recorded, taking the overall number of Georgia’s (excluding occupied territories) COVID-related deaths to 2,481. Moscow-backed authorities in Abkhazia reported 112 new cases of COVID-19, taking the tally of total confirmed cases in the region to 8,675. 40 more patients have recovered, bringing the number of recoveries to 6,786. 2 more COVID-related fatalities were reported, taking the number of deaths in the region since the onset of the virus to 113. The number of active cases to date stands at 1,776.

17:40 GMT+4 – NCDC Head Tests Positive for COVID

Head of the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) Amiran Gamkrelidze has tested positive for COVID-19. According to the NCDC, Gamkrelidze has no clinical symptoms, has moved to self-isolation and will continue “self-monitoring and, if necessary, treatment” at home.

13:15 GMT+4 – 18 New Cases, 25 More Recoveries Reported in Tskhinvali

Moscow-backed authorities in Georgia’s Tskhinvali Region/South Ossetia reported 18 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the tally of total confirmed cases to 2,370. 25 more patients have recovered, taking the overall number of recoveries to 1,605. With 27 COVID-related fatalities reported since the onset of the virus, the number of active cases in the region to date stands at 738. 

11:10 GMT+4 – 469 People Fined for Defying COVID-19 Regulations

Georgian Interior Ministry has revealed 469 cases of disobeying regulations imposed against the spread of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. In particular, police have fined 79 citizens for defying isolation and/or quarantine rules, including those who violated the 21:00 – 05:00 curfew. 390 citizens were also fined for breaching face mask regulations.

According to the Georgian authorities, out of the 2,012 new COVID-19 infections diagnosed over the last 24 hours, the highest number of cases – 837 – was confirmed in Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi. The western Imereti region came in second with 367 reported cases.

As for the remaining new daily cases, 125 were reported in Adjara; 155 in  Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti; 132 in Kvemo Kartli; 144 in Shida Kartli; 34 in Mtskheta-Mtianeti; 147 in Kakheti; 28 in Samtskhe-Javakheti; 31 in Guria, and 12 in Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti region.

Moscow-backed authorities in Georgia’s Tskhinvali Region/South Ossetia reported 43 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the tally of total confirmed cases to 2,352. 79 more patients have recovered, taking the overall number of recoveries to 1,580. With 27 COVID-related fatalities reported since the onset of the virus, the number of active cases in the region to date stands at 745.

Georgian Interior Ministry has revealed 611 cases of disobeying regulations imposed against the spread of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. In particular, police have fined 93 citizens for defying isolation and/or quarantine rules, including those who violated the 21:00 – 05:00 curfew. 518 citizens were also fined for breaching face mask regulations.

Kremlin-backed leader of occupied Abkhazia Aslan Bzhania has tested positive for COVID-19 and has moved to self-isolation. Apsnypress news agency reported that Bzhania is receiving treatment on an outpatient basis as his symptoms are mild.

11:20 GMT+4 – 577 People Fined for Defying COVID-19 Regulations

Georgian Interior Ministry has revealed 577 cases of disobeying regulations imposed against the spread of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. In particular, police have fined 93 citizens for defying isolation and/or quarantine rules, including those who violated the 21:00 – 05:00 curfew. 484 citizens were also fined for breaching face mask regulations.

14:00 GMT+4 – Georgia to Slightly Ease COVID Restrictions for New Year

The Government of Georgia announced on December 22 that it will lift several coronavirus lockdown rules during December 24 to January 2.

Due to the new coronavirus strain discovered in the United Kingdom (UK), the Interagency Coordinating Council has decided that all persons, including Georgian citizens with a history of travel to the UK during the last 14 days, will be subject to a 12-day mandatory quarantine period upon entry into Georgia.

13:00 GMT+4 – Legal Stay Period for Foreign Nationals, Stateless Persons Extended

Amendments were made to the Government of Georgia Decree N164 due to coronavirus-related restrictions, extending the legal stay period for foreign nationals or stateless persons from December 31, 2020 to July 1, 2021.

The amendments affect non-Georgian citizens who could not leave the country because the state of nationality of the person was in a high-risk zone, due to border crossing-restrictions, or due to cancelled flights. Persons who were placed in hospital, quarantine or self-isolation, and were forced to remain in Georgia will also receive the stay period extension.

In addition, remaining on the territory of Georgia between January 1 and July 1 will be considered legal for the purpose of obtaining a residence permit in Georgia, given that relevant criteria are met.

According to the U.S Embassy in Georgia, the U.S. Government, in collaboration with Enterprise Georgia, will fund foreign investment advisory firm OCO Global “to identify and promote high-value investment opportunities in the Georgian economy.”

17:00 GMT+4 – ADB Approves USD 2.5 Mln Grant for Georgia

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a grant of USD 2.5 Million to Georgia to support the country’s ongoing efforts in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to ADB, the COVID-19 Emergency Response Project grant, financed from ADB’s Asia Pacific Disaster Response Fund (APDRF) with a contribution by the Government of Japan, will be used for “increasing laboratory and diagnostic testing capacity and providing personal protective equipment and general medical equipment required for Georgia’s COVID-19 response.”

According to Moscow-backed authorities in Georgia’s Abkhazia region, the United Nations Development Program has delivered two batches of COVID-19 humanitarian cargo to the Sokhumi, worth a total of USD 62,000.

The first November 17 shipment included 500 liters of disinfectant “to ensure the safety of students and teachers during classes.” The second batch, delivered on December 2 to eight educational institutions in Abkhazia, included 4,000 biosecurity suits, 3,000 disposable medical gowns, 3,000 shoe covers, 4,500 medical caps, 10,650 masks, 700 plastic face shields, 42,000 gloves, 100 infrared thermometers, 200 mercury thermometers, 30 touch dispensers for hand sanitizer, and 500 liters of hand sanitizer.

The Interagency Coordination Council announced changes to isolation/quarantine rules for Georgian citizens entering the country, according to which citizens who arrive in Georgia without a negative PCR test result will no longer have to undergo mandatory quarantine at a hotel, and must, instead, self-isolate for 12 days. Citizens able to provide a negative PCR test result performed in the last 72 hours will only have to self-isolate for 8 days.
