Multinational Military Drills to Kick Off in Georgia

The U.S. and Georgia-led “Agile Spirit” military exercise is to kick off on September 1 at Senaki military base in western Georgia.

Troops from the Georgian Armed Forces and the U.S. Marine Corps Forces Europe, as well as from Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Romania, Turkey and Ukraine will participate in the exercise.

Agile Spirit will be held in Georgia for the eighth time and will include command and staff training based on defense, attack and stability operations “in real time and multinational environment.”

Commander of West Command of Land Forces, Brigadier General Giorgi Matiashvili said the exercise aims at enhancing Georgia’s interoperability with the U.S. and other partner nations, as well as with the NATO.

Agile Spirit was initially a bilateral U.S.-Georgian military exercise held in Georgia since 2011, but since 2015 a number of other countries have joined in.

It comes less than a month after the end of the Noble Partner, a major annual military exercise held by the Georgian and U.S. forces together with NATO member and partner nations.
