Prosecutor General Targets Ex-Officials’ Property

The Georgia Prosecutor General’s Office sued on June 23 for confiscation of the property of several former top officials.

This is the first case when the General Prosecutor?s Office resorts to the anti-corruption law, passed by the Parliament in February. The law envisages confiscation of assets of those officials and ex-officials who fail to prove assets were acquired legally.

The Genera Prosecutor?s Office targeted three former officials: Levan Mamaladze, former influential governor of Kvemo Kartli region during the Shevardnadze?s presidency, who is now wanted by the Georgian law enforcers and is allegedly hiding in Russia; Levan Kenchadze, ex-chief of the Security Ministry?s Anti-Terrorist Center and Gogi Kupreishvili, former Deputy Security Minister of Adjarian Autonomy and a close ally of Adjarian ex-leader Aslan Abashidze.
