Saakashvili Underscores Key Tasks for Conflict Resolution

President Saakashvili said today that the Georgian authorities must fulfill three key tasks in order to settle the situation in breakaway South Ossetia.

“The first task envisages ensuring of safety of the peaceful population. We will do our utmost to protect our population in the South Ossetian conflict area,” Saakashvili said before the session of the National Security Council on August 12.

He said the second task – the economic one – envisages smuggling not resuming in the breakaway region, which would undermine the economy of Georgia.

According to the Georgian President, the third task, labeled as “political,” envisages avoiding Georgia”s involvement in an armed conflict. “We do not need this conflict, we intent to reintegrate the country peacefully,” the President added.

“All these tasks are decisive at the moment. We need coordinative efforts to avoid further provocations and to settle the existing problems through peaceful means,” Saakashvili said.

It is anticipated that the recent developments in breakaway South Ossetia will be discussed at the session of the National Security Council.
