Saakashvili: Georgia, U.S. Partners in Spreading Democracy
President Saakashvili focused on democracy during his address to the Georgian citizens from Freedom Square, in Tbilisi, on May 10 and said that Georgia and the United States share the responsibility ?to extend freedom.?
?Historically, Georgians fought for only one cause, the cause of liberty. And not only their freedom but the freedom of others too,? Saakashvili said.
?We [Georgia and the United States] share a common commitment to freedom and a shared vision of what liberty means for the lives of our people and future generations. This common belief imposes on us a shared responsibility to extend freedom to those who have been denied the right to make their own democratic choices. From Belarus – which you have rightly called the ‘last dictatorship in Europe’ – to Cuba to Burma to the slave state of North Korea,? the Georgian President stated.
He said that the Rose revolution ended with the victory of liberty in Georgia, ?but it continues with a new wave of democracy which is freeing more and more nations.?
?Georgia will be your partner in spreading democracy around the world,? he added.
He also said that his government faces many challenges ?but the first is strengthening the foundations of our national democratic society.?
?We came with roses in our hands and we faced a thorny path to rebuild Georgia,? he added.
