Parliament Discusses Proposal on Free Trade Zone

(Tbilisi. April 22, 2003. Civil Georgia) – After two-week long deadlock the Parliament could start today discussion of the draft law, considering creation of the free trade zones in Georgia.

The draft law is submitted by the Revival Parliamentary faction, backed by the leader of the Adjarian Autonomous Republic Aslan Abashidze, which lobbies creation of the free trade zone in Adjarian capital Batumi.

Georgian President and the central government oppose the draft law.  

Last week Parliamentary special session failed to start discussion of the proposal because of the boycott of the pro-Presidential Parliamentary factions, which are against of creation of the free trade zones.

It is anticipated that the Parliamentary opposition will be able to clear 79 votes barrier needed for approval of the proposal on free trade zones.

Discussion of the amendments to the Election Code is also scheduled during this week.
