Over Thousand Georgians Deported from Europe in Third Quarter of 2023

More than a thousand Georgian citizens have been readmitted from Europe over the last three months, according to the Ministry of the Internal Affairs. Out of 1074 people in total, 696 citizens (including 333 men, 164 women and 199 minors) were readmitted from Germany, followed by France with 136 deportees (97 men, 16 women and 23 minors). The list continues down with Switzerland (48), Greece (33), Poland (28), Spain (26) and Italy (21).

Germany, which tops the list, has recently pledged to step up its efforts directed at tackling the irregular migration, leading to the expectation of the increase of deportations from the EU in the future.

“We are classifying Georgia and Moldova as safe countries of origin. Both want to become members of the European Union, as such it isn’t plausible to assume systemic oppression in those countries,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz underlines in his interview with Der Spiegel, adding that “we are strengthening the protection of Europe’s external borders so that fewer people are able to make their way to Europe.”

“It is very important for Georgia to fulfil especially those obligations which are imposed within the visa liberalization and the Association Agreement,” opposition MP Khatia Dekanoidze said, noting that “the economic hardships, the Georgian Dream rule, very severe social and economic environment lead a lot of people leave Georgia to seek refuge…”

Another opposition MP Ana Buchukuri thinks that while the Prime Minister often boasts the economic growth in the country, “the benefits in reality are distributed among 20-25 families.” “As you know, according to the latest survey, every third young person in this country is thinking about leaving the country for the EU and the USA. “This is a disaster,” she added.
