Russian Reports: Akhalgori Blast not a Terrorist Act
A powerful explosion at ammunition depot in Akhalgori district of breakaway South Ossetia on March 8 was not a terrorist act, Russian news agency, Itar-Tass, reported quoting Russian military command on the ground.
According to this report no one was killed or injured as a result of the explosion; the Georgian media sources, however, reported that several Russian servicemen were injured and there could have been several fatalities as well.
According to the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM) the explosion occurred near the village of Mosabruni. It said on Monday that mission monitors, patrolling close to the administrative border, heard explosion at around midday on Sunday.
“We understand that it is not clear at all what happened – whether it was an accident or some form of sabotage,” EUMM said in a statement. “Since the EUMM has an interest in ensuring stability and normalization in all the areas adjacent to the administrative boundary line, we would be very happy to offer our services to conduct a neutral investigation into the cause of this incident, if allowed to do so by the relevant authorities in the area.”
The European monitors are patrolling in the areas adjacent to South Ossetia and Abkhazia and are not allowed inside the breakaway regions.
