New Rights Opposition Slams Zourabichvili’s Dismissal

The opposition New Rights party criticized the Georgian government’s decision to dismiss Salome Zourabichvili from the Foreign Minister’s position as an attempt to “change the country’s western foreign policy into a Russian-oriented one.”

“So far the foreign policy was the only positive [development] of the current authorities. But an end was put to this with the dismissal of Salome Zourabichvili, who has become a victim, sacrificed by President Saakashvili to the Kremlin,” MP Davit Gamkrelidze, the leader of New Rights party, said at a news conference on October 20.

He said that there is a clear crisis in the country “and the only way – the peaceful way – to overcome this crisis will be to dissolve the Parliament and to call early elections.”

Shortly before her dismissal on October 19, Salome Zourabichvili also called on President Saakashvili to dissolve the Parliament.
