Reports: Moscow Objected Bush’s Visits to Latvia and Georgia

The New York Times reported on May 6 that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov sent a letter of protest to U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice shortly after the White House announced that, in frames of his European trip, along with Russia President Bush would also visit Latvia and Georgia.

In response to, as the New York Times put it, this “unusual step” by Sergey Lavrov, Condoleezza Rice “promptly shot back, in effect, that Mr. Bush could visit whatever countries he wished.”

The White House announced this planned visit by the U.S. President to Latvia, the Netherlands, Russia and Georgia on March 24.
