Lithuanian Officials Visit Georgia to Study Border-Related Issues
A delegation of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry and Border Guard Department visits Georgia on May 4-7 to discuss the issue of possible monitoring the Georgian-Russian border by Lithuanian observers.
The members of the delegation have already held talks with Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Kakha Sikharulidze. The talks with Chief of the Georgian Border Guard Department Badri Bitsadze are also planned.
The Georgian Border Guard Department reported on May 3 that the members of the delegation will also visit Chechen, Daghestani and Ingush sections of Russo-Georgian border which was monitored by the OSCE observers before last December, when Russia vetoed to extend their mission.
Lithuania was among those states, which was lobbying monitoring of the Russo-Georgian border under the EU flag. Georgian Foreign Minister Salome Zourabichvili said in April after talks with her Lithuanian counterpart Antanas Valionis in Tbilisi that Lithuania is ready to either assist Georgia directly in the border monitoring mission or participate in any other mission of the European Union.
