German Expert to Help Georgian Officials

Saakashvili: Georgia needs a lot of support
from outside.
Germany will send a group of experts to Georgia to support its economic and democratic development, Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said after a meeting with the new Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili in Berlin on January 30, the German daily Welt reported. German specialists shall be deployed for the instruction of customs officers and Diplomats.

The German Minister for Development Aid, Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul, announced the transfer of 26 million Euros to Georgia to strengthen the country’s economy.

“Georgia is a country that needs a lot of support from outside”, the Georgian President said, adding that without financial help from Germany “the country would have not survived.”

In the talks that followed with Federal President Johannes Rau, Saakashvili said, he has deliberately chosen Germany as the destination of his first foreign visit and not the USA or Russia. Saakashvili will be visiting Moscow and Washington on February 15 and February 25 respectively.
