Russia, Georgia Discussed Abkhazian Issue

(Tbilisi. March 25, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Russian and Georgian authorities held talks in Moscow over the situation in Abkhazian conflict zone, Georgian Foreign Ministry reports on March 25.

Secretary of the Georgian National Security Council Tedo Japaridze, Special Affairs Minister Malkhaz Kakabadze and Deputy Foreign Minister Merab Antadze held talks with the Russian President’s envoy for the Abkhaz conflict settlement Valeri Loshchinin on March 24.

According to the Georgian Foreign Ministry the sides expressed readiness to implement provisions of the agreement signed by the Russian and Georgian Presidents in Sochi on March 7, envisaging return of IDPs in the conflict zone restoration of the railway link between Russia and Georgia via breakaway Abkhazia.

Georgian side expressed concern regarding the continuing railway connection between the Russia’s city of Sochi and Abkhaz capital Sokhumi. Georgia agrees to resume railway link only in case of return of Georgian IDPs in the region.
