At UN, Georgia Breaks with EU, Ukraine, Backs Toned Down U.S. Resolution on War

Georgia is the only co-sponsor of the UN General Assembly Resolution on the Ukraine war proposed by the U.S. delegation, which significantly tones down criticism of Russia, Wall Street Journal reported on February 22.

The international media reports that the U.S. draft stops short of blaming Russia for the war, “implores a swift end” to the conflict, and mourns “the tragic loss of life throughout the Russian Federation-Ukraine conflict.” The watered-down three-paragraph U.S. draft breaks with the tone of the previous version. It avoids blaming Russia for aggression and makes no specific demands of Moscow.

Until Friday, the publication said, the U.S. had been working with the Europeans on the 21-paragraph Ukrainian draft, which described the devastating impact of the Russian invasion on the country and called for accountability for war crimes, among other things. On Friday, the U.S. reportedly asked Ukraine to withdraw this draft resolution. Ukraine refused to do so, and its European partners are pushing ahead with the original version.

The Ukraine resolution has been introduced every year since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. The Georgian government has supported the Ukrainian resolution in previous years. Yet, the reported language could be perceived as a step in line with its policy rapprochement with Russia. The GD government is also keen on patching up its relations with Washington, which had hit an all-time low when the U.S. imposed sanctions following the violent crackdown on pro-EU and pro-democracy protests in the last days of President Joe Biden’s administration.

So far, despite strained relations with Ukraine and frequent attacks on the Ukrainian government, the GD authorities have habitually dismissed the accusations of not supporting Ukraine by arguing that Georgia supports Ukraine on international fora.
