EU, UK and U.S. Ambassadors Meet with PM Kobakhidze over Foreign Agents’ Law
The European Union Ambassador Paweł Herczyński, the United Kingdom Ambassador Mark Clayton, and the United States Ambassador Robin Dunnigan met with Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze while the bill was being considered by the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs.
The government administration said that the draft law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence” was the topic of the discussion at the meeting. The statement further said: “The Prime Minister noted that the law fully complies with all basic legal principles and is aimed only at the annual disclosure of finances of non-governmental organizations and relevant media.”
Irakli Kobakhidze, the statement said, stressed that “if the government itself is an example of transparency and all government decisions and legal acts are published, it is not clear why it is unacceptable for non-governmental organizations to meet the minimum standard of transparency.”
The ambassadors did not make any statements as they left the government building.
