Opposition Group Moves Campaign to Provinces

A group of opposition parties planning to launch street protest rallies from April 9 to demand President Saakashvili’s resignation said it was now moving the campaign in lead up to the rallies to provincial regions to continue collecting of signatures of citizens joining their demand.

Eka Beselia of the Movement for United Georgia, part of the group, said on March 9, that the group managed to collect slightly over 48,000 signatures in Tbilisi in last five days. She said it was a significantly large number for the event of this kind organized by the group. Roughly 940,000 voters, about the third of the country’s registered voters, reside in the capital city.

The campaign will be carried out, Beselia said, in 16 towns, including in Telavi, Gori, Zestaponi, Poti, Dusheti, Batumi, Ozurgeti, Akhaltsikhe, Marneuli, Gardabani, Rustavi, Senaki, Gurjaani, Samtredia, Zugdidi and Kutaisi.
