Saakashvili: Georgia’s Reunification Plan in Force

Georgia has a plan to unite Georgia and this plan, which lies through the country’s economic development, has not dissipated anywhere, President Saakashvili said on December 11.

“This plan has not gone anywhere and we have not rejected it,” he told a group of Georgian businessman.

“Russia has crossed everything; it has actually shaken the entire world architecture. It said: I am ready to be such an invader, as it was Nazi Germany, to be as nasty as it was Stalin’s Soviet Union, to invade into another country and say: this is me, I am invading, I am annexing and I am ready to do everything. There are two answers to it: either to yield to it by saying Russia is anyway strong – but if you lay down, it will overcome you and eat you, unfortunately. But the second option is to always have in mind that no one has ever got away with it what Russia has done, either the Nazi Germany or other invaders.

“Nobody has recognized these intrusions except for Russia. Look, what kind of statements were made by President-elect Obama, look what Condoleezza Rice said; she said that Russia has failed to win the war [with Georgia]; we have numerous opposition politicians here, in Georgia, who say that Georgia has lost the war, while the U.S. Secretary of State says that Russia has lost the war. How does it match with each other? Are we the enemies of ourselves?” Saakashvili said.

He was apparently referring to the U.S. Secretary of State’s December 9 remarks, when she told the U.S. National Public Radio: “I have to say that the unity of the United States and Europe in response to what happened in Georgia has made it impossible for Russia to achieve its strategic goals. The Georgian Government is intact. Georgian democracy is intact. Georgia has been given incredible resources from the international community for rebuilding its territory. And it’s Russia’s motives and behavior that are being questioned worldwide. So I think Russia didn’t achieve very much and it lost a lot concerning Georgia, and perhaps that will deter them from that kind of action again.”

The Georgian President also said on December 11: “Georgia has not lost the war until we are alive, until the Georgian state is alive, until the Georgian flag is flying on this building, until the entire world supports Georgia and until Russia is isolated by the rest of the world over this issue. The only way to solve this issue – it is not tanks, planes, machine guns and cannons – the only way to solve this issue is Georgia’s economic success.”
