MoD Releases Names of Fallen, Missing Soldiers
The Georgian Defense Ministry has released the names of all Georgian soldiers either killed or listed as missing as a result of the August hostilities.
The officially registered number of Georgian Defense Ministry personnel killed during the war is 115, as of September 25, including eight officers, 96 corporals/sergeants, nine reservists, one private and one civilian.
The number of missing is 54, including 14 officers and 40 corporals/sergeants.
Last week the opposition Conservative Party demanded that the authorities make public the names of all Georgian soldiers killed in the August war. The party accused the Defense Ministry of a deliberate suppression of the names.
The Defense Ministry explained that the 43 unknown soldiers recently buried in Tbilisi were among those listed as missing.
The Ministry said on September 15 that the officially registered number of Georgian citizens killed during active hostilities was 370 – 188 civilians; 168 Defense Ministry personnel and 14 from the Interior Ministry.
However, the September 25 figures, which the Ministry claims were thoroughly rechecked, exceed the officially registered figures published on September 15 by one.
