Russia Partially Reopens Border Checkpoint

Russia has temporarily and partially reopened the border crossing point at Zemo Larsi, located at the northern end of the Georgian Military Highway between Kazbegi and Vladikavkaz.

Cars will be allowed to cross the border from now until September 3. Trucks, however, will not be allowed through the checkpoint, which was closed down in July. After September 3, the border will be closed again.

?We are calling for a total resumption of the functioning of this border crossing point,? Valery Chechelashvili, the Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister, said on August 31.

Russian officials said in July that the Zemo Larsi checkpoint was closed down because of repair works, but the Georgian side said there were political motives behind the decision.
