Russian Official, OSCE Envoy Discuss South Ossetia

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin met with Head of the OSCE Mission in Georgia, Ambassador Roy Reeve, in Moscow on February 1 to discuss the situation in the South Ossetian conflict zone, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported.

?The sides expressed concern over the volatile situation in the region, requiring the implementation of urgent measures to reduce tension and prevent a new wave of confrontation between the conflicting sides,? the Russian Foreign Ministry said in an information note.

The OSCE envoy and the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister stressed the necessity to immediately resume negotiations between the Georgian and South Ossetian sides in frames of the quadripartite Joint Control Commission. The sides also expressed readiness to closely coordinate efforts to assist in the process of Georgian-Ossetian conflict settlement, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

One South Ossetian militiaman was wounded as a result of a shootout which erupted near the breakaway region?s capital Tskhinvali overnight on February 1. Three South Ossetian militiamen were injured in a similar skirmish on January 28.
