Tbilisi, Sokhumi Discuss Peace Proposals

The Georgian President’s aide for Abkhaz conflict issues Irakli Alasania discussed the Georgian side’s proposals to outline its peace plan, or roadmap for the Abkhaz conflict resolution with Foreign Minister of breakaway Abkhazia Sergey Shamba in Sokhumi on May 24.

“We are trying to solve this problem and there is the necessary political will for this and this is very important. We have already received the Abkhaz side’s proposals over conflict resolution. Today we [the Georgian side] proposed our project. Tomorrow we will present it to the Group of Friends [of the UN Secretary General],” Alasania was quoted by Apsnipress news agency after talks with Shamba.

“It [document] is not a roadmap for conflict resolution. These are principles on which, as the Georgian side thinks, the roadmap should be based,” he added.

Alasania said that there will be controversies during the consultations process, “but we should be able to move forward.”
