Georgia to Construct New Military Base

President Saakashvili said on May 15 that construction of a new military base will be launched this year in eastern Georgia.

He was speaking with reporters while visiting the newly constructed military base in Senaki, western Georgia. Saakashvili described the Senaki military base as “the best in the former Soviet Union.”

“We have been discussing recently and decided to construct a similar base in eastern Georgia as well. This one [in Senaki] is in the west to reinforce this [region] and the second one should be in the east and we should launch construction [of the new base] this year. It should be [constructed] somewhere near the highway so that our citizens can see it and be proud of it, while our enemies should have no desire to walk near it,” Saakashvili says.
