Republican Party Ready to Join Commission on Judicial Reforms

Leader of the opposition Republican Party Davit Usupashvili said on April 18 that his party is ready to join a governmental commission which will work over reforms in the judicial system.

President Saakashvili said on April 17 that the governmental commission, chaired by PM Zurab Nogaideli, will be set up to foster reform in the judiciary and invited representatives from political parties and non-governmental organizations to join the commission.

“It doesn’t matter what motivated the President to make this decision – western pressure, the opposition’s role in the ongoing political processes or other reasons. We are oriented towards results and therefore we do not assess the recognition of mistakes by the authorities as a weakness. Such a mistake was the presence of the General Prosecutor in the Justice Council and we only welcome the fact that the President recognized it,” Davit Usupashvili said at a news conference on April 18.

Speaking at a meeting with the parliamentary majority on April 17 President Saakashvili said the “separation of the General Prosecutor from the Justice Council would be the first step” in reforming the judiciary system.

The Republican Party leader said that he has already sent proposals which should help improve the country’s judicial system. “If the commission [agrees with the reccommendations of] these proposals, we think that this would significantly change the current situation in the judiciary,” Usupashvili said.
