Reports: One Injured in South Ossetia Shootout

Viacheslav Kudziev, deputy chief of police of the Ossetian village Artsevi – in the South Ossetian conflict zone –  was injured after a shootout with a unit of the Georgian Military Police on December 5, Georgian media sources reported.


NewsGeorgia news agency reported that Kudziev was injured after the Georgian Military Police tried to arrest him near the Georgian village of Ergneti in the conflict zone. Kudziev was hospitalized in the town of Gori, Shida Kartli region of Georgia.


The South Ossetian Press and Information Committee confirmed that Kudziev was arrested near the village of Ergneti and described it as ?an abduction.? According to this report, Kudziev was driving in the direction of the South Ossetian capital Tskhinvali, but was attacked near Ergneti and ?kidnapped.?


It is not yet clear what was the reason behind this incident or what the reason behind the presence of the Georgian Military Police in the conflict zone – where only the servicemen from the joint Russian, Georgian, Ossetian peacekeeping forces are authorized to be located – was. Officials from neither the Ossetian nor the Georgian side have made comments so far.
