Georgia Seeks Alternative Gas Suppliers

Georgian Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania said on January 12 that Georgia should not be dependent on a single gas supplier by 2006-2007 and instructed the Energy Ministry develop a plan which will secure alternative gas supply sources for the country.

Currently, Georgia is supplied only with gas only from Russia. The capital city Tbilisi receives gas from Russian energy giant GazProm, while the regions are supplied by another Russian energy giant, Itera.

?We are interested in searching for several alternative sources [of gas supply],? Zurab Zhvania said at the government?s session on January 12.
