Lack of Finances Delays By-Elections

(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, October 30, 2002) – The Parliamentarian by-elections in four constituencies – Samtredia, Abasha (western Georgia), Rustavi and in Tbilisi district of Saburtalo – are postponed from November 24 by November 30.

The Central Election Commission (CEC) took the decision today because of lack of finances.

The CEC members say that in case the Finance Ministry does not provide the CEC with funds by November 1, the by-elections will be further delayed.  

According to the watchdog NGO International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy, almost all pre-election procedures’ timelines are violated for today.
