Pro-Presidential MPs Claim Election Code Approved with Violation

(Tbilisi, July 29, 2003, Civil Georgia) – At the parliamentary session on July 29 the opposition Revival faction and the pro-presidential factions Alliance for New Georgia and Socialists cast doubts over the legitimacy of the new election code adopted by the Parliament with the first hearing on July 24.

They stated that the new election code was adopted with a number of procedural violations.

The opposition factions claim the pro-presidential factions try to hinder final ad!
option of the election code.

”There were no violations. Revival and other factions just want to fail adoption of the election code. Adoption of the code is not in the interest of the pro-Presidential factions,” Gigi Tsereteli, Vice-Speaker of the Parliament and the member of the United Democrats opposition factions said at the session today.

He said that the pro-Presidential factions seek to maintain the current “discredited Central Election Commission.”

The debates over issue delays discussion of the Election Code with the second and third hearings.

After heated discussions the Parliament’s special session adopted on July 24 rule of composition of the Central Election Commission, which considers implementation of the US-suggested election guidelines, delivered in Georgia by the former US Secretary of State James Baker.
