EU Envoy on Georgia Meets Russian Deputy FM

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Grigory Karasin, met with Pierre Morel, EU’s special envoy and co-mediator of Geneva talks, in Moscow on March 26, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported.

It also said that the Russian side provided the EU diplomat “information about those representatives of the Russian Defense Ministry, who will participate in the work of joint mechanisms on incident prevention in the areas adjacent to Abkhazia and South Ossetia.”

The proposals agreed by the sides in Geneva on February 17-18 involve regular weekly meetings and they have also “agreed joint visits may be conducted” in the areas of concern. The agreed document is not self-executing and its implementation depends on a good will of the parties on the ground. Recently Tbilisi accused Moscow and Tskhinvali of absence of this will.
