Parliament Greenlights Salary Hikes for Top Officials

On March 7, the Parliament hastily adopted amendments to the law “On Remuneration in Public Institutions” in the third hearing, significantly hiking the salaries of the President, Prime Minister, Ministers, and their deputies and other officials, effective 2025. Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze justified the change on March 5 as a means to prevent corruption.

According to the parliament, the salaries of high-ranking officials will thus conform to the legally determined amount, which is derived by multiplying the official base salary by the legally determined coefficient. The National Statistics Office is determining the official base salary annually and it currently stands at GEL 1,330 (app. USD 500). The highest coefficient – ten – is reserved for the President and the Prime Minister (see the table below).

The change means that the Prime Minister’s annual salary will grow from GEL 41,000 (approximately USD 15,500) to GEL 159,600 (appx. USD 60,200). The Ministers’ wages from GEL 66,000 (appx. USD 24,900) – GEL 81,000 (appx. USD 30,500) will double to reach GEL 135,000 (appx. USD 51,000).

The calculations provided above are based on the current base official salary of GEL 1,330 (app. USD 500). The government will likely revise the base official salary rate annually.

The rapporteur, chair of the Georgian Dream faction, Rati Iotanamashvili, told the parliament that the salaries of the parliamentary officials were aligned to the legally determined levels last year. “Now, it is crucial to extend this standard to high-ranking political officials, including those in the executive branch, as well as the Public Defender and the Chief Auditor.”
