US Helsinki Commission Condemns Proposed “Foreign Agents” Law
The United States Helsinki Commission has released a joint statement expressing concerns over a Russia-inspired “foreign agents” law endorsed by the ruling majority, stating that it would have a chilling effect on the country’s civil society and would be a rebuke to its EU and NATO aspirations.
The statement, issued by Helsinki Commission Chairman Representative Joe Wilson, Co-Chair Senator Ben Cardin, Ranking Member Representative Steve Cohen, and Ranking Member Senator Roger Wicker, urges the Georgian government to reject the legislation and renew its commitment to democracy. It also condemns the ongoing democratic decline in Georgia, including the imprisonment of political opponents, and notes the current government’s increasing embrace of Russia.
“We call on the Georgian government to reject the proposed legislation and renew its commitment to democracy,” the statement reads. “Since 1991, the United States has been a firm and untiring friend to the Georgian people. This will not change, regardless of the government’s position.”
