PM Tells Armenian Counterpart Georgia Ready to Mediate
Following a conversation between Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on 13 September, the Georgian Government’s press service reported that PM Garibashvili expressed Georgia’s readiness to act as a mediator for the de-escalation and peaceful resolution of the recent flare-up of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Government’s press release says the telephone conversation was initiated by PM Pashinyan, who provided information to the Georgian PM about the situation on the ground.
PM Garibashvili expressed hope that both sides would return to the negotiating table to resolve the conflict peacefully.
Reports first emerged early morning on 13 September that fresh border clashes had broken out between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
According to Reuters, at least 49 Armenian soldiers have been killed as a result of the hostilities, which Armenia has said started when Azerbaijan shelled several towns near the Armenian border.
For its part, Azerbaijan has claimed that it was attacked by Armenia. The international community, including Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, has called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Russian Foreign Ministry said a decision to cease fire was reached at 9:00 this morning and expressed hope for it to hold.
