Survey Reveals Russians’ Stance on S.Ossetian Conflict

A public opinion survey published by the Russian Public Opinion Foundation (POF) on February 23 says that 57% of Russian citizens surveyed think Russia should take a neutral position while dealing with the South Ossetian conflict. 21% of respondents think Moscow should support South Ossetia, while 3% think Russia should support Georgia.


The POF carried out a nationally-representative survey of 1500 respondents in mid-February.


66% of respondents think that the South Ossetian conflict concerns Russia’s interests. 44% of surveyed said Russia should have its peacekeepers in the conflict zone while 23% said no and 34% where undecided.


According to this survey, 27% of respondents think breakaway South Ossetia is currently part of Georgia and 41% consider the region an independent state.
