New Rights, Republicans on Break Up of Alliance for Georgia

New Rights and Republican parties said that they wanted closer “structural” integration among the parties, which were united in a coalition, Alliance for Georgia, but no agreement was reached on the matter with Irakli Alasania, as a result the Alliance fell apart.

Irakli Alasania, chairman of Our Georgia-Free Democrats party, who led the Alliance for Georgia, announced about dissolving of the Alliance on June 15 and said that he would now focus on building and development of his own party.

Davit Gamkrelidze, leader of New Rights Party, said on June 16, that his party was in favor of turning Alliance for Georgia into a single political party, but it became clear after the elections that such scenario was impossible.

He said that the New Rights would continue to prepare for the next elections and would cooperate in this process not only with parties, which were part of the Alliance for Georgia, but also with others.

Davit Usupashvili, the leader of Republican Party, said on June 16, that his party was also in favor of integration.

“Irakli Alasania deemed strengthening of his party as a precondition for future political success and has decided to focus his efforts on this. We respect his choice and wish him success,” Usupashvili said.

He also said that the Republican Party was ready to continue cooperation with former partners from Alliance for Georgia.

The Alliance for Georgia was established in February, 2009 by New Rights, Republican Party and Irakli Alasania, Georgia’s former UN ambassador, who quit the post and went into opposition in December, 2008. In July, 2009 Alasania established his party, OGFD, which automatically became part of the Alliance for Georgia in which Alasania was a chairman. Ex-public defender, Sozar Subari joined the Alliance as an individual member in September, 2009 and quit the coalition just after the local elections. In April, 2010 the Alliance was joined by ex-foreign minister Salome Zourabichvili’s party, Georgia’s Way.
