No Peace at Expense of Territories ? Saakashvili
President Saakashvili said Georgia wanted peace, but not at the expense of the territorial integrity.
Speaking with journalists on January 7, after attending an Orthodox Christmas mass in the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Tbilisi, Saakashvili said: “The Patriarch [Ilia II] spoke on two important issues – the one is that Georgia, the Georgian people want peace, but not at the expense of giving up of our territories – this is a very important, fundamental concept, which is a foundation of our national policy.”
The Patriarch of the Georgian Orthodox Church wrote in his Christmas epistle that Georgia is “a peace-loving nation” and Georgia wanted peace, but not at the expense of the territories.
“And the second issue is that the Patriarch spoke about the global economic crisis and its consequences on Georgia,” Saakashvili continued while speaking with journalists. He added that there was economic crisis in the world and in Georgia “we have difficulties related to this crisis.”
“The global economic crisis has not yet entered into Georgia and we should spare no efforts to prevent its full-scale coming into Georgia.”
He said that the top priority for the authorities was to have secured energy supplies.
“Gas supply is cut to the entire Europe; but Georgia, unlike most of the European states, has managed to secure gas and electricity supplies,” Saakashvili added.
