Saakashvili Says Pre-War Status Quo Ante Key
The Georgian struggle against Russian aggression continues, President Saakashvili said on October 6.
He said his objective was to return to the pre-conflict status quo ante, including in terms of economic development.
“The first attack against our country has been repelled, but some may think that the struggle is over – the struggle is not over for me, for the Georgian government and for our country so long as even one occupier remains in Georgia,” Saakashvili said in Tserovani village in the Shida Kartli region.
He said economic woes caused by the August war had been exacerbated by the international financial crisis.
“Of course, the world crisis has a negative influence on our economy,” he continued. “It hits our banking system; it hits our construction companies; it hits employment in Georgia.”
The president, however, said Georgia could overcome the crisis quickly because “Georgia is a small economy and because we have an effective government, and a low level of corruption.”
He said economic stability and democracy would depend largely on “how quickly we prepare the ground for peaceful withdrawal of occupiers and for the restoration of Georgia’s territorial integrity with the support of the world.”
