Tskhinvali Ratifies Cooperation Treaty with Moscow

The South Ossetian parliament has ratified a treaty of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance between Russia and the breakaway region, the South Ossetian Press and Information Committee reported on October 2.

The treaty was signed by Russian President Medvedev and secessionist leader Eduard Kokoity in Moscow on September 17. A similar treaty was signed between Russia and breakaway Abkhazia.

The Abkhaz parliament has already ratified the treaty.

Meanwhile, the South Ossetian Press and Information Committee reported that Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov is in Tskhinvali. According to the report, the Moscow Mayor’s Office will allocate 2 billion Rubles (approximately USD 87 million) for reconstruction in Tskhinvali.

Luzhkov is due to meet Kokoity to discuss the construction of a railway line.

“The railway should become an alternative to the Roki tunnel and will link South Ossetia with Russia,” the South Ossetian Press and Information Committee reported.

The railway project was first unveiled by President Medvedev a couple of weeks ago.
