Moscow Calls for Restraint in S.Ossetia
The Russian Foreign Ministry has called on the Georgian and South Ossetian sides to show restraint and find ways out of the current “crisis situation.”
“The Russian side expresses the most serious concern over the escalation of tensions in South Ossetia; [Russia] is taking vigorous measures to prevent further escalation of armed confrontation between the Georgian and South Ossetian sides,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on August 2.
The South Ossetian side reported that six people were killed and about 15 injured as a result of shelling and sniper fire directed towards Tskhinvali and nearby Ossetian villages by the Georgian side late on August 1 and overnight on August 2.
According to the Georgian side, which said that it had been forced to return fire, seven people, including a policeman, were injured in the shelling of Georgian villages.
