Georgia Amends National Security Concept
The Georgian Parliament approved with 136 votes to 0 an amendment to the country?s National Security Concept in its first hearing on September 7. The amendment envisages the introduction of ?a doctrine on total and unconditional defense.?
Officials say that the amendment was precipitated by an increase in foreign threats.
?This is a very important political decision that reflects additional measures that should be undertaken for the protection of our national interests,? Zurab Dekanoidze, the President?s Parliamentary Secretary, told parliamentarians.
He said that according to the amendment, the country ?will be guided by the principle of a total and unconditional defense system? in case of foreign aggression against the country.
?For this purpose the state is creating a system of compulsory reserve troop service, providing the necessary equipment and armament for this system and developing an appropriate command and control system? The Georgian Ministry of Defense should develop the Doctrine of Total and Unconditional Defense, which then will be approved by the President,? Zurab Dekanoidze said.
