U.S. House Condemns Russia’s Moves

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a nonbinding resolution on May 7 criticizing “provocative and dangerous statements and actions” taken by Russia that “undermine” the territorial integrity of Georgia.

The resolution calls on the Russian authorities “to immediately revoke” its decision to establish official ties with breakaway Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

It also calls on the UN to investigate the April 20 downing of the Georgian unmanned reconnaissance drone over Abkhazia by, as the resolution puts it, “reportedly by a Russian MIG-29 fighter jet.”

The resolution also urges the foreign ministers of NATO member states at their meeting in December 2008 “to consider favorably” Georgia’s application for NATO Membership Action Plan.
