Georgia Plans Cut of Defense Spending in Next Years

Georgia plans to decrease defense sending from the current 5.6% of country’s GDP to 2.3% of GDP in 2012, according to the government’s five-year plan.


According to the document, which among other directions also outlines the government’s priorities in defense sphere, funding of the Ministry of Defense will go down to GEL 950 in 2009 and 2010 from the current GEL 1.1 billion and to GEL 900 million in 2011 and 2012.


Defense funding has been cut from GEL 1.495 billion in 2007 to GEL 1.1 billion in 2008.


The document, which is a comprehensive version of the government’s five-year plan released in January, was posted on the Parliament’s website on May 6 (available in Georgian).
