Opposition Activists Block Main Thoroughfare at Parliament

The opposition is due to resume protests outside Parliament, as its activists continue blocking Rustaveli Avenue, the capital city’s main thoroughfare on March 25.

Although there were only a few hundred people gathered outside the parliament at noon, opposition activists were blocking the avenue with benches brought from a nearby park.

Patrol police, conspicuously absent from outside Parliament, were busy regulating the resulting traffic overload on nearby streets.

At a rally on March 24, opposition leaders announced that in addition to an ongoing hunger strike they would begin “permanent protest rallies” to force the authorities to compromise on key election rules.
