Competition Deadline for Public TV Top Job Extended

The public TV’s board has extended the deadline for the submission of applications for the position of Direct-General from March 15 to March 23.

The board cited a lack of time for potential candidates to submit necessary papers. The absence of political consensus among the opposition and the authorities on who should become the new head of the public TV, however, seems to be the real reason behind the decision.

Nino Burjanadze, the parliamentary chairperson, blamed the opposition’s refusal to continue dialogue for the failure to agree on the nomination of new Georgian Public Broadcaster (GPB) boss. Tina Khidasheli of the opposition Republican Party, however, said the opposition had nominated a candidate, but it was rejected by the authorities and the latter has so far failed to nominate a candidate.

Khidasheli has declined to reveal the opposition’s nomination; however, it was reported earlier that the opposition was in favor of Ia Antadze, a journalist and political commentator, who has applied for the job.

The nine-member board of trustees, which was set up following an agreement between the opposition and the authorities, has to appoint a new director general by April 4.
