Conflicting Reports on Tskhinvali Water Supply
Joint monitoring, with the participation of the South Ossetian secessionist authorities, of a water pipeline has revealed that there is enough potable water for the residents of the breakaway region’s capital, Tskhinvali, the Georgian State Ministry for Conflict Resolution Issues said on July 18.
The monitoring, with the involvement of OSCE observers and Russian peacekeepers, was carried out on the Andisi-Tskhinvali section of the water pipeline on July 17.
The Foreign Ministry of breakaway South Ossetia, however, has provided a contradictory assessment of the monitoring, saying that the water supply to the capital had decreased by 20%.
It said that the monitoring had found “numerous leaks” in the pipe on Georgian-controlled territory.
The Georgian side has acknowledged the damage, but said it would be repaired “in the nearest future.” The Tbilisi-loyal South Ossetian provisional administration will carry out the repair work, according to the Georgian State Ministry for Conflict Resolution Issues.
