Georgia Says Russia’s Navy Maneuvers Part of Blockade

Georgia accused Russia on October 18 of using its navy maneuvers on the Black Sea as a tool for the economic blockade of Georgia.

“Several weeks ago we received an official notification about planned navy maneuvers from Russia. This is a provocative move and part of the economic blockade on Georgia… because a large part of the territory involved in the maneuvers is part of Georgia’s economic zone,” Mamuka Kudava, the Georgian Deputy Defense Minister, said.

He briefed members of the government about the maneuvers at a government session on October 18.

In late September, the Georgian Foreign Ministry warned that Russia’s planned navy maneuvers would have negative consequences on Georgia’s “trade-economic interests” and called on Russia to refrain from a “show of force.”

The Georgian Foreign Ministry said that Russia’s plans to hold navy exercises in Georgia’s exclusive economic zone, in immediate proximity to Georgia’s territorial waters, “will restrict the operation of Georgia’s Black Sea ports of Batumi, Poti and Supsa.”
