Azerbaijan, Ukraine Mull over GUAM Peacekeeping Forces
During a meeting in Baku on May 30 Azerbaijani and Ukrainian Defense Minister Safar Abiyev and Anatoly Gritsenko, respectively, discussed the possibility of setting up a peacekeeping unit in frames of the GUAM – Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Moldova – Interfax and RIA Novosti news agencies reported.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of a session of the CIS Defense Ministers’ Council. Georgia has been ignoring the sessions of this Council for several years already.
A meeting of deputy chiefs of staff of the GUAM members states’ armed forces is scheduled for this June to discuss the possibility of creating a joint peacekeeping force, which will act in cases of necessity under the UN aegis, according to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.
