Venice Commission Delegation Visits Georgia

A delegation of the Council of Europe’s Venice Commission led by Gianni Buquicchio, Secretary of the Venice Commission, arrived in Georgia last night to discuss the revised draft law on rehabilitation and restitution of property to the victims of the South Ossetian conflict, the Council of Europe Tbilisi Office reports.

The delegation will hold talks with Georgian officials, representatives of international organizations and civil society.

On February 8 the members of the delegation will meet with Georgian Justice Minister Gia Kavtaradze to discuss the draft law on restitution.

“The members of the delegation will have particular remarks and proposals regarding the draft law. We will work together over two days and take into account their opinions while developing a final draft law,” Gia Kavtaradze said on February 8.

The Venice Commission is expected to adopt a relevant opinion regarding the draft law on restitution at its next plenary session on March 17-18, 2006. Georgia undertook a commitment to pass a law on Property Restitution in 1999 while joining the Council of Europe.
