Secretary of National Security Council Warns of Provocations

Secretary of the Georgian National Security Council Kote Kemularia said on February 6 that Georgia should not yield to provocations, which might take place after Russian peacekeepers withdraw from the South Ossetian conflict zone.

Kemularia was speaking with reporters after talks with U.S. Ambassador to Georgia John Tefft.

“The so-called Russian peacekeepers pose a certain threat to the Georgian state. We should not yield to any provocations. An aggravation of the situation is anticipated. But we should also have a constant dialogue, constant consultations, with Russia as well,” Kemularia told reporters on February 6.

“Our authorities will not take a single step against the country’s interests, but at the same time we should pursue our position, which is supported by the entire world – peaceful resolution of a conflict. We should take care of our asset, which is international support,” Kemularia added.
