MIA: Anti-Aircraft Missile System Discovered

Russian-made man-portable anti-aircraft missile system “IGLA” was found in the Kareli district of Shida Kartli region late on February 2, the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) reported on Friday.

“This place [where the IGLA system was discovered] is near to a traditional air route used by planes and helicopters, including that of President Saakashvili, conducting flights from the east to the west or vice versa,” Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili said at a news conference on February 3.

He also said that this kind of anti-aircraft missile system is “widely used by terrorists throughout the world” and it is of vital importance to find out how “this weapon was brought near the South Ossetian conflict zone.”

Merabishvili also alleged that several paramilitary groups in South Ossetia possess anti-aircraft missile system “IGLA.”

He said that although identification number assigned to the discovered weapon is erased, it is still possible to identify the number.
