Russia Stops Issuing Pensions for Non-Russian Citizens in Abkhazia

Russia will stop issuing pensions for those residents of breakaway Abkhazia starting from December, 2005, who have not yet obtained Russian passports, Vice-Premier of the unrecognized republic Leonid Lakerbaia said on November 1 according to the Apsnipress news agency.

Lakerbaia said that number of those residents who have been receiving pensions from Russia, but so far have not obtained Russian passports, totals to 2 027.

Lakerbaia said that the Abkhaz authorities called on these people for many times to obtain Russian passports. ?The only thing we can do now is to urge Russia not to stop, but temporarily suspend distributing pensions, before these people obtain passports. But it is less likely that we can achieve this, because the Russian side has took into consideration our position for several times already,? Lakerbaia said.
